Argument & conversation... what's the difference?

Callie Brown on couch with laptop holding a pencil

Hello lovely,

Do you know the difference between an argument and a conversation?

They're NOT the same thing.

An argument is talking to yourself.  A conversation is talking to each other.

An argument happens when two people arrive with a conclusion. Both are explaining. Both are defending. Both are waiting for their turn to speak. No one is actually being changed by what they're hearing.

A conversation is different. It's an exchange. A willingness to let another person's perspective touch yours without immediately rejecting it. Not because you have to agree. But because you're curious enough to understand.

Arguments are about proving.

Conversations are about discovering.

One protects being right. The other values relating.

Real conversations make room for both people.  For questions.  For nuance.  For "Help me understand."  For "I've never thought about it like that."  No one has to lose for both people to grow.

When people tell me they're struggling with communication, it's rarely because they don't know how to speak. It's because they've forgotten how to listen without preparing their rebuttal.

The healthiest relationships I've witnessed aren't the ones with the fewest disagreements. They're the ones where two people keep choosing conversation over arguement.

Because feeling heard will always deepen connection more than feeling right.

Big love,
