After everything I've done for you...

Hello,

Have you ever heard yourself say, “After everything I’ve done for you.”  Or thought it.

Because I have.

You spend the afternoon doing all the things. You take the kids somewhere. Spend the money. Organise it. Make it happen. You say yes when it probably would have been easier to say no. And then they’re still fighting in the car.

And there it is. That low-level hum of annoyance.

Seriously? After everything I’ve done for you…

And this is the bit that gets me. Sometimes we’re not just wanting appreciation. We’re expecting a response.

I’ve done this for you, so now I’m expecting something from you.

Notice it. Appreciate it. Be grateful. Respond differently.

And when you don’t, I feel wronged.

But hang on. I chose to do it. You didn’t choose my yes. I did.

That doesn’t mean I don’t want to be appreciated. Of course I do.

I want the people I love to see me. To notice the effort. To say thank you. That’s human.

But you are not responsible for making my choice to give feel good.

Oof. That one lands.

Because sometimes I say yes when I don’t have it to give. I give more than I’ve got. I do the thing because it’s easier than saying no.

And then, somewhere down the track, I’m resentful that nobody seems grateful enough. For something I chose.

That’s the invisible contract. The one nobody else knew they’d signed.

And I think this is where our giving meter matters.

Not Should I be more generous? But Do I actually have this to give?

Because I want my giving to feel like a gift. Not a debt. Not an expectation. Not something I quietly hold over you later.

Clean. Not perfect. Just clean.

And when I notice it isn’t? Oh. There I am.

No shame. No making you wrong. Just, information. Because this is the stuff I love exploring with people.

The tiny moments where something feels like it’s about them, and then you realise there’s a whole lot of you in there too.

Having someone in your corner while you untangle that stuff can change everything.

Not someone telling you how to behave. Someone who can help you hear yourself more clearly, stay connected to your own experience and make room for theirs.

If that’s the kind of space you’re wanting, hit reply.

Tell me what’s going on.

You don’t need to know exactly what you need yet.

We can start there.

Huge love,
