Are we accidentally outsourcing our friendships?

Callie Brown on couch with laptop holding a pencil

Hey lovely.

“Wait… are we accidentally outsourcing our friendships?”

You know that one friend you always go to for something specific?

The one who somehow always knows the best café.

The one who can decode relationship drama like it’s their full-time job. The one you text when your kid has a weird rash, your plant is dying, or you need a dinner spot with parking and good chips.

And the beautiful thing is, they LOVE being that person for you.

There’s this tiny little moment of connection that happens when we reach out.A feeling of:“You thought of me.”“You trust me.”“You know me.”

And recently, a friend said something that stopped me in my tracks.

She said,“There’s been so many little things I would’ve normally messaged you about… but instead I’ve just been asking ChatGPT.”

And listen — these tools are incredible. Truly. They can save time, support us, help us learn, simplify life in so many ways.

But they were never designed to replace the magic of human connection.

They’re not here to do the reaching out for us.They’re not here to replace the back-and-forth voice note, the “OMG thank you,” the random side quest conversation that somehow turns into a heart-to-heart.

Because sometimes the question was never actually about the café.It was about connection.

So this is your reminder to keep asking your people.Keep texting the friend who “just knows.”Keep creating reasons to stay in each other’s lives.Keep community alive in the smallest, most ordinary ways.

Because one day we may realise that those “little conversations” were never little at all…they were part of the fabric of our very being. The thing that sustained our health, our sense of belonging, our humanity, and our zest for living.

Bring back “Ask a friend”!

Huge love,
