What if THIS is education too?

Hey lovely,
My daughter sent me a video from the kitchen this morning while I was at the gym, giving me a full breakfast report.
What she made. Why she made it. What was in it. The state of the kitchen.
Meanwhile, there was washing draped over the couch, the kettle had just boiled, my 13-year-old was rummaging around making himself brunch, and somewhere between the smell of toast and the morning sun coming through the windows, I had one of those.
“Ohhhhhh.” Moments.
Because what if THIS is education too?
Not the shiny, report-card bit. The barefoot, toast-crumbs-on-the-bench bit.
The bit where you realise you’re hungry and go make yourself something. Where your brain is full after an hour of tutoring and you wander outside and ride your bike. Where you notice the sun is glorious and decide to eat your lunch in it. Where the washing needs folding, the sheets need changing, the fridge needs food and someone needs to work out where the hell the coriander went.
The very unglamorous business of being a human.
We spend so much time teaching children how to use their brains. But what about teaching them how to live in the body attached to the brain?
How to notice when they’re hungry, tired, overloaded or restless. How to feed themselves. Move themselves. Look after their space. Contribute to a home. Listen to their own rhythm.
Because these aren’t little life-admin extras. They’re foundations.
A hungry, exhausted, overstimulated human isn’t exactly operating at peak mathematical potential. And yet so many of us reach adulthood having learnt how to achieve things, but not necessarily how to care for the person doing the achieving.
So we spend our twenties and thirties learning the stuff we somehow missed.
How to eat properly. How to rest. How to regulate. How to say no. How to recognise that sometimes the answer isn’t another coffee and pushing through.
Maybe “self-care” was never meant to be a luxury. Maybe it’s simply being taught how to be a person.
Perhaps education isn’t only about preparing our kids to go out into the world and earn a living. Maybe it’s also about teaching them how to participate in caring for themselves while they’re living it.
And maybe, for those of us who didn’t quite get that education the first time around, it’s never too late to learn.
Huge love,
